What an odd question for a weight loss blog…
It’s hard to pin it down to any one thing.
My fascination with Star Trek stated when I watched The Next Generation when it first screened with mum. She was a fan of the original series, but never pushed me into watching it. I saw she was pretty excited about TNG, so I thought I’d give it a go. I liked it.
I’d always been interested in the idea of space travel, so that generic science fiction angle appeals to me. But more than that, it’s one of the few science fiction shows that doesn’t fall into the trap of using a grungy, dystopian vision of the future — I reckon that’s too easy. “Fuck it, let’s make some big, scary space monsters attack earth and want to kill everyone’s mothers.” Sure, Star Trek gets pretty holier-than-thou at times, but part of me likes that.
But more than either of these, I’d have to say that I really like most of the characters. I’d like to have a beer with Data, Geordie LaForge and Worf. I’d love a mentor figure in my life like Jean-Luc Picard. I think I could even learn to tolerate Will Riker.
I guess that doesn’t really answer the question of what I “get out of Star Trek” — I get entertainment from it — but I hope that gives a little understanding.
For what it’s worth, it probably makes sense to ask me questions like these over on my real-life blog.
